About the Teacher

Janet Hinton was born in Peterborough, Ontario where she began playing the piano at age 5. Her formal training began at age 7. Upon her move to London, Ontario at age 10, she continued her studies through The Western Ontario Conservatory of Music, The University of Western Ontario. As a teenager in Ottawa, Janet studied with Irene Woodburn-Wright. She obtained her Associate Diplomas in both Pedagogy and Performance from The Western Ontario Conservatory of Music, The University of Western Ontario prior to completing highschool. She then went on to complete her Bachelor of Music (Honours Piano Performance) degree from the University of Ottawa studying piano with Cynthia Millman-Floyd and accompanying with Evelyn Greenberg. Ms. Hinton also studied in France with both Catherine Collard and Jean-Paul Sevilla.

As a soloist, Janet has performed extensively since childhood in music festivals throughout Ontario including the Canadian National Exhibition (C.N.E.) where she has won many awards and scholarships. In addition to full recitals, guest performance invitations include The Ottawa Youth Orchestra, The Harmonica Club, The Musical Arts Club and The National Arts Centre Association in Ottawa.

Ensemble work has also played a large role in Janet Hinton’s musical career. She has performed in duets, trios, duos as well as in quartets. A highlight was the invitation to participate as a duo pianist in Ottawa’s special Piano Festival. Twenty duo pianists performed Handel’s Arrvial of The Queen of Sheba and Khactaturian’s Sabre Dance on twenty pianos under the baton of Irene Woodburn-Wright.

As a professional accompanist, Janet held the position of Assistant Accompanist for the Faculty of Music, University of Ottawa for some years. She then moved on to freelancing for singers, instruments, choirs, musicals, churches, schools and ballet classes.

Ms. Hinton’s teaching career began at age 13 in London, Ontario. Her 30 years’ experience includes preparing students of all ages and levels for The Royal Conservatory of Music and Conservatory Canada (formerly The Western Ontario Conservatory of Music, The University of Western Ontario) piano and theory examinations as well as competitions with students winning many top awards and scholarships. Janet has also been an Affiliate Teacher of The Royal Conservatory of Music for many years.

Janet’s professional affiliations include longstanding membership in the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations (C.F.M.T.A.), the Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association (O.R.M.T.A.) and The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). She served as an Executive Committee member for the O.R.M.T.A. Etobicoke-Mississauga Branch from 2003 to 2006. Janet spearheaded and was Coordinator for the O.R.M.T.A. Etobicoke-Mississauga Branch’s special event “Students Celebrating Music” held at Sherway Gardens shopping mall on July 8, 2006. She was also Coordinator for the O.R.M.T.A’s booth at the Canadian National Exhibition in 2005.

Janet is founder of Piano Narrations, a unique and fun performance vehicle whereby students may gain confidence, experience and self-esteem through a group production on the concert stage.

In addition to the above, Janet Hinton was a french hornist for some years. She was a member of the Junior and Senior Bands at Ottawa’s Sir John A. MacDonald Highschool and started up the School’s first horn quartet. Janet also played in the Ottawa Youth Band and the Ottawa Youth Orchestra. In the summers, she attended the International Music Camp playing in both their band and orchestra.

As a singer, Ms. Hinton has belonged to various choirs throughout her life. More recently she has been a member of the University of Toronto Symphony Chorus performing professionally in concerts with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Elmer Iseler Singers under the baton of Erich Kunzel at Roy Thomson Hall.

Janet continues to stay abreast of the ever changing music world through attendance at international conferences and continuous participation in workshops and masterclasses.
